some of my favorite movies

"I already know an awful lot of people. Until one of them dies I couldn't possibly meet anyone else." -Audrey Hepburn, Charade

On the occasions when Saturday night at home consists of a trip to the movie store to rent something to accompany popcorn or ice cream, I am often frustrated by getting there and having no clue what to rent. I usually end up getting something based on its cover, and it is usually not very good. Sometimes, if it is Monday through Thursday, I have two bad movies because it was two for one night. You cannot judge a movie by its DVD case.

This is especially frustrating because I just know that I had two or three great recommendations that I was dying to watch a few weeks ago, and I simply can't remember what they were. And Netflix On Demand and I are no longer friends because there are so many terrible movies on there and I end up watching the first 7 minutes of 12 movies before closing my computer and reading a book. So here are a few recommendations, from me to you, of things to pick up on Saturday night. These are all my favorites as of right now.

  • Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. Black and White film at its best, plus some fabulous quotes and beautiful scenery.
  • Pretty in Pink with the Brat Pack. If you don't know who Duckie is, you need to. Eighties style, unrequited love, and a fantastic soundtrack.
  • School of Rock with Jack Black. Funny, witty, quotable and worth owning.
  • Hors de Prix with Audrey Tautou. Visually wonderful, charming, and unique. Every time I watch it I wind up thinking that it would be somehow nice to be a French gold-digger.
  • A Good Year with Marion Cotillard, based on Peter Mayle's novel. Everything I love about Peter Mayle and the south of France, but in film! Food, dialogue, and scenery galore.

  1. I saw Audrey in person at the Oscars in the early 90's. It was like seeing the Dalai Lama in person I imagine. Such an inspirational woman.
