dirt heat

Blisters on my heels while the dirt
dries out in the sunshine all around me,
worms digging down to find damp,
pavement heating up like the answer
to all my cold. Silt dries deeper -
the earth cracks, heated, pulling itself
into the moisture it once held,
melted from a thousand snows,
the memory of old springs sighing.
